Going that extra brick further... 04/04/2008

In addition to environmental initiatives already undertaken by Computer Cab, we announced in November that we are establishing a Carbon Fund to offset all our account customers` journeys.
What we are doing with the Fund?
After spending months researching all the options available, Computer Cab has selected four key projects to offset carbon emissions. These projects not only offset carbon emissions but will improve the health and livelihoods of the communities involved, will help "real people".
Sudan Low-Smoke Cook Stoves
We will provide LPG fuelled stoves to local communities, this will stop them cooking on open fires using wood in their homes. This project will reduce emissions, LPG is much more efficient than wood and also attains a higher cooking temperature. Two benefits - less smoke within the hut and higher cooking temperatures means less diseases.
Why we like it?
- Strong developmental benefits in an area currently suffering climate change impacts
- Emphasis on long-term financial sustainability
- High emissions reduction potential
- Improves people`s health
Mini-Taxi (Tuk-Tuks) Engine Retrofit
Providing support to a local business that converts two-stroke mini taxi engines to modern fuel-injection technology. More efficient engines reduce carbon emissions and ambient air pollution.
Why we like it?
- High climate change reduction potential
- New business opportunities for local entrepreneurs
- Improving air quality in cities
- Reduced fuel costs for taxi drivers
Nicaragua Improved Brick Kilns
Financing the implementation of improved brick kilns for artisan brick makers in Nicaragua. Originally artisan brick makers used wood as fuel to run the kiln, now they will be utilising new improved kilns which will use agricultural residues such as corn stalks/rice husks etc (these are burned anyway to clear the fields), this new design reduces emissions from unsustainably harvested fuel wood.
Why we like it?
- High climate change reduction potential
- Enables shift to sustainable fuels
- Improves incomes for artisan brick makers and their employees
Community Tree Planting in India & Africa
Small groups of local subsistence farmers plant trees from a selected species which help to prevent soil erosion and improve survival prospects.
Why we like it?
- Strong developmental focus, supports local farmers
- Additional benefit to the farmer, the shade provided by trees can be used for various means (for example - an area for cattle to rest out of the sun or to grow extra crops e.g. chillies)
Why are we not majoring in the UK?
Our aim was to offset emissions in less developed countries and focus on those that are not part of the Kyoto Protocol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyoto_Protocol) or on the Annex 1 list.
However, we are helping in our own backyard by supporting Trees for Cities charity with funding for their inner urban tree planting project.
Our carbon offsetting projects will be managed by Carbon Clear (www.carbon-clear.com), our carbon management partner. All projects are audited and verified by independent auditors such as Bureau Veritas and DNV (depending on availability and location).
